Have you ever been so discouraged with life that you find yourself wondering why life is testing you? I’ve been there, but I’ve learned to keep a positive mindset. You too can learn to keep your head up.
Here are 5 ways you can keep your head up, even in the midst of tremendous turmoil.
1) Have an Attitude of Gratitude
One of the ways you can keep your head up, when times are tough, is to have an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for the small things in life. What are some thing you can be grateful for?
The biggest reason to be grateful is that you are still breathing. That means you have a chance to do good in this life. You also have a chance to grow closer to God and save your soul.
Be grateful for your family and friends. Some of you might say your families and friends don’t care about you or you don’t have any. Come on now! Someone cares about you, even if it is your Facebook friends.
2) Remember Your Goals and Stay Focused on Your Goals.
If you want to keep your head up in the midst of amazing life challenges, write down your goals.
How does writing down your goals help?
In order to have a goal, you must first have a vision and just having a vision injects some optimism.
Write down your goals and look at them every day.
Everything you’re doing should be focused on reaching those goals in some small way.
To use an example, let’s say you want to save $200 a month to buy a house. Every month that you save for that house should make you happy. Even though some other things may be going wrong in your life, you can at least know you are working towards your goal of buying that house.
Now what if you’re horrible at sticking to goals? Don’t get discouraged. Figure out why you’re missing your goals. Maybe you’re spending too much money on shoes or Starbucks.
You can change that the next month!
3) When Problems Arise, Look for Solutions; Don’t Complain
When you talk to your friends, ask them to brainstorm with you about possible solutions.
Complaining does nothing but put you in a negative mindset.
Strive and pray for a solution-oriented mindset.
Example: “My life sucks. I work so hard, I don’t have time for my family and they all hate me.”
Better conversation: I work really long hours and have no time for my family. How can I delegate better so that I’m not spending hours at work? Is there another career path that would require less hours?
If you speak to your friends this way, they will brainstorm with you to come up with solutions or they might even offer some possible solutions.
Train your friends to stop you every time you start complaining.
4) Start & End Your Day With Prayer
Prayer is the most powerful way to help you deal with the trials of life. Get into the habit of praying every morning when you first wake up and every evening when you go to bed.

In addition to the traditional prayers, I found this beautiful prayer.
I give you all that I am this day.
Please brush away my weariness,
So that I may be inspired in my work.
Help me to discover new ways to reveal your love to all I meet.
Keep my mind clear and focused on all I need to achieve,
And give me the wisdom to overcome difficulties and find solutions.
I look to you and trust you are with me this day.
The prayer to the Holy Spirit by St Augustine of Hippo is one of my go-to prayers.
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Breathe into me Holy Spirit, that all my thoughts may be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.
This prayer is also pretty amazing.
MOST sacred Heart! I select Thee as my resting-place, that Thou mayst be my strength in combat, my support in weakness, my light and guide in darkness, the expiation of my faults, and the sanctification of my intentions and actions, which I unite with Thine. Amen.
You can’t go wrong if you start and end your day with prayer.
5) Maintain a Positive Mindset
It is so important to maintain a positive mindset and to protect it. I can’t repeat that enough.
Protect your environment
Don’t hang around with toxic or pessimistic people. I will talk more about toxic people in tomorrow’s broadcast.
Be careful of what TV programs you watch or radio programs you listen to. Be careful of which sites you visit.
If you find yourself falling into despair, then you know you have to eliminate whatever is causing it from your environment. Don’t get rid of your husband now!
Watch your language
Don’t ever allow yourself to use put-downs like the following:
- “I’m so stupid.”
- “I’m not good at anything.”
- “I have such horrible luck,”
If you follow even one of the above tips, you will find that you will keep your head up, even in the midst of tremendous pressure.
